Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut on Research for Leonida: “We Travel Around With Cops and With Gang Members”
In LOVE Magazine’s GTA VI issue, out today, Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut describes the Florida research trips behind the game, as quoted by Dexerto.
Reported — the quotes come from LOVE Issue 27, out on newsstands October 5, as quoted by Dexerto the same day. We have not read the magazine itself, and LOVE has not put the interview online.
What Garbut says, as quoted: “We do go in-depth, we hang with locals and we hear lots of stories and learn as much as we can. We travel around with cops and with gang members.” And: “The people who showed us around were among the nicest we’ve met, the stories, the places, the details could be terrifying.”
Why, in his words: “We try to build a world that is believable and varied, with depth, so that is the research we need.” Dexerto reports the trips ran from Miami through nearby towns to the Florida Keys and Key West, with flights over the Everglades; of one trip Garbut says, “I think we made the local news the next day.”
The limit of this story: these are second-hand quotes from a print interview. They describe how Rockstar researched the game, not anything specific that is in it.
