“That Doesn’t Work Here”: Rob Nelson on Why Leonida Reacts to the Guns You Carry
Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson told TGG that GTA V’s shotgun-from-nowhere is gone. You can keep two handguns concealed; long guns are visible, and people react to the one in your hand.
Reported: these are Nelson’s words as quoted by TGG and Dexerto. In his words: “In GTA 5, you can pull out a shotgun from nowhere in front of people, and they don’t react. That doesn’t work here.” And the reason: “We don’t feel that works any longer at this resolution with the behavioral sophistication we need from our population now.”
How carrying works, as described: two handguns can stay concealed at all times. Long guns are always on show — one slung on the back, one in hand — and the population reads the difference: “if you just have a long gun on your back, you should be fine. If you’ve got one in your hand, people don’t like it and they react and start moving away from you.”
Coverage adds that heavier weapons need to be stored somewhere rather than carried endlessly, in the spirit of Red Dead Redemption 2; that detail is reported rather than quoted. It fits the witness-and-description police model on our gameplay mechanics page: what you carry is part of what people see.
