Digital Foundry: Native 1440p at 30 FPS on a Base PS5 — and 60 FPS Called “Extremely Unlikely”
Digital Foundry’s read of the Extended Look puts GTA VI at a native 1440p, spatially upscaled to 4K, at a well-paced 30 FPS on a base PS5 — with ray-traced reflections, and little headroom for a 60 FPS mode.
Reported, not Confirmed: this is the most trusted technical outlet in games measuring Rockstar’s own footage, but it is a measurement of a video, not a specification from Rockstar.
The findings. The image is a native 1440p with no dynamic resolution, brought up to 4K by what Digital Foundry describes as “a relatively straightforward spatial upscale” — which brings “a degree of softness, visible geometric aliasing and shimmer on fine details.” The frame rate is a “relatively stable and well-paced 30FPS” with only occasional single dropped frames. Ray-traced reflections are doing real work, although some of them look noisy.
On 60 FPS, the outlet is blunt: a 60 FPS console mode is “extremely unlikely” without cutting the density of the world and its population. That lines up with Rob Nelson declining to promise one.
What is not known: figures for PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X (Digital Foundry expects Series X to be similar). Articles claiming “native 4K on PS5 Pro” extrapolate from generic Sony guidelines, not from anything GTA VI-specific, and should be read as Unverified.
